The liturgical edition begins with Advent and runs for an entire cycle of the seasons, which is roughly December through November each year. It is usually available in early September.

The academic edition runs from August to July and is usually available in early June.

The main difference between the two is the dates. Otherwise, the content and construction are the same. Daily prayers come from Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals by Shane Claiborne, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, and Enuma Okoro, is a 2010 resource that helps today’s diverse church pray together across traditions and denominations. With an ear to the particulars of how various liturgical traditions pray, and using an advisory team of liturgy experts, the authors created a tapestry of prayer that celebrates the best of each tradition.

Weekly scriptures come from the lectionary, a three-year cycle used in corporate worship across the world and throughout centuries to guide churches through the Christian Scriptures. Many versions of the lectionary exist, and our planner draws from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), a widely used ecumenical resource. The weekly lectionary rhythm includes four texts: one each from the Old Testament, Psalms, Epistles, and Gospels. Some feast days carry their own lectionary passages, and these are noted in the planner on the appropriate days. Some feast days carry their own lectionary passages, which are noted in the planner on the appropriate days.

Daily scriptures come from the Daily Office Lectionary, a two-year cycle of texts for personal devotional reading from the Book of Common Prayer. Year One begins at Advent preceding odd number years. Year Two begins at Advent preceding even numbered years. Most days include five readings, a morning and evening Psalm, an Old Testament, an Epistle, and a Gospel reading. The latter three can be read together or broken up and read with the morning and evening Psalms. Occasionally, special Holy Days will supersede the regular readings. The name of these Holy Days will be listed in the date line. The Daily Office readings are to be a helpful tool not a strict rule. Feel free to read more or less, and in whatever order or time works best for your situation.

The Daily Sacred Ordinary Days Planner lists daily prayers and both weekly and daily scriptures. The Weekly Sacred Ordinary Days Planner lists weekly scriptures.

The short answer is, use it in whatever way works best for you in your current season of life. There is no right or wrong way to use it. You can also visit our blog and podcast archives to find more guidance on how to get started and ideas from other planner users, including Jenn.

All editions and formats of the Sacred Ordinary Days daily planner are specially bound in a manner that allows the most flexibility for a book binding, while maintaining beautiful aesthetics and durability. The planner will open and stay open, but a crisp brand-new planner may need a little encouragement with a second heavy book placed on top overnight. The pages are intentionally designed so there is a large margin of open space to avoid writing near the fold.

We initially sold the 2016 liturgical edition via Kickstarter. Currently, Sacred Ordinary Days planners are only available right here, at sacredordinarydays.com.
