Curious Kid's Guides by Marc Olson
Curious Kids' Guides present cool and surprising information about Christian history and beliefs in an entertaining, visually engaging way for kids.
The World Jesus Knew: A Curious Kid's Guide to Life in the First Century
Jesus often told stories using everyday objects to help his listeners understand life with God. But for most of us, the deep imagery and meaning behind those objects has been lost to history. The World Jesus Knew: A Curious Kid's Guide to Life in the First Century helps kids discover the world Jesus lived in through maps, charts, graphs, and other infographic elements. They’ll learn about the culture Jesus lived in: his Jewish religion, the power of the ruling Roman Empire, the role of fishermen and carpenters and shepherds. It’s an invitation to explore the stories of Jesus in their cultural context, bringing new life to familiar biblical events. This beautifully illustrated book will be a family favorite that kids and adults will come back to over and over again.
The World of the First Christians: A Curious Kid's Guide to the Early Church
The life and teachings of Jesus changed the world forever--but what happened after the events of the Gospels? How did Christianity grow from a small group of followers to one of the largest religious movements in human history? How did the first Christians survive in an oppressive Roman Empire? What did the early church believe, and how did they worship? The World of the First Christians: A Curious Kid's Guide to the Early Church answers these questions and more, with colorful illustrations, charts, graphs, maps, and other infographics that will keep kids' attention for hours and give them new insight and understanding into the early growth of the Christian faith.
The World of the Old Testament: A Curious Kid's Guide to the Bible's Most Ancient Stories
The stories of the Old Testament present modern readers with a world completely foreign from our own. Curious kids riveted by these stories are likely to come away with questions. Who were the people who lived in the time and place in which these stories were set? How did they work? What did they eat? What were their families and tribes like? How did they fight? What did they believe about God, kings, enemies, and the world around them? And above all, what does any of it have to do with how we read and understand the books that make up the first half of the Bible? The World of the Old Testament: A Curious Kid's Guide to the Bible's Most Ancient Stories answers these questions and more, with charts, graphs, maps, and other infographics that will keep kids' attention for hours, and send them back to the Bible with surprising new insights and understanding.

Light Upon Light: A Literary Guide to Prayer for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany by Sarah Arthur
As Lauren Winner says "Maybe it’s not right to think of feasting during the somewhat penitential season of Advent, but that is what this book is: a sumptuous feast.”
In keeping with At the Still Point: A Literary Guide to Prayer in Ordinary Time (“a thing of beauty” and “a literary treasure trove and devotional feast,” two reviewers called it) this collection contains daily and weekly inspirational readings to help the reader prayerfully experience God through the liturgical seasons of winter. Well-loved classics by Andersen, Dickens, and Eliot join contemporary works by Frederick Buechner and Gary Schmidt. Poems by Donne, Herbert, and Rossetti are paired with newer voices: Scott Cairns, Benjamín Alire Sáenz, Susanna Childress, and Amit Majmudar. Readers are invited to experience Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany in its raw strangeness, stripped of sentiment, and to turn toward Emmanuel in Light Upon Light A Literary Guide to Prayer for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany.

In short: both spiritual succor and pure pleasure.”
— Image Update
“Each year I look for ways to make the Advent season more meaningful. It can be surprisingly hard to find something fresh and new. But a new release compiled by Sarah Arthur, Light upon Light, is my pièce de résistance for this year. As Arthur says in her introduction: ‘Finding the works for this collection, discovering some of these authors and poets, has been like lighting one candle after another. Flame upon flame, light upon light, until the hallowed sanctuary of our quiet devotion becomes something of a shrine.’ Her book lives up to that description.”
— JoHannah Reardon, Christianity Today
“For years I have been seeking a book which weaves scripture, prayer and the finest poetry and fiction into the devotional experience of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. Finally I have found it: an elegant and accessible gem with some classic texts and a rich selection from contemporary literature. This is not only a useful book, it is edifying and exciting reading—the perfect way for the literature lover to focus, meditate and celebrate this time of year.”
— Jill Peláez Baumgaertner, poet, professor of English and Dean of Humanities and Theological Studies, Wheaton College
"In our individual darknesses we long for more light. Sarah Arthur understands this, and, as if pulling together scores of candles with burning wicks, she illuminates our whole year with the gift of flaming words. A treasure of enlightenment."
— Luci Shaw, author of Breath for the Bones and Adventure of Ascent
"A beautifully navigated journey through a treasury of literary wisdom—a book to cherish."
— Jeremy Begbie, professor of theology and director of Duke University Initiatives in Theology and the Arts

I discovered this unassuming series one afternoon when I got lost on Amazon--and have not regretted it since! If you love literature and scripture and the slow-reading of both, then this gem is for you. My absolute favorite book in the series is the "Between Midnight and Dawn" one she wrote on Lent and Eastertide. Her selections mirror the death and descent we experience during Lent and the rising and resurrection we experience during the Eastertide season.

Jan Richardson is one of the wonderful voices of calm and reason amongst the chaos. I picked up nearly everything of hers during the pandemic and have found that her prayers, even in times where I am flustered bring a sense of calm.
This book is particularly beautiful in its printing and communicates a great sense of depth in understanding who God is through words and art.
In the Sanctuary of Women: A Companion for Reflection & Prayer by Jan Richardson
In this sequel to the groundbreaking Sacred Journeys, In the Sanctuary of Women invites us to cross into a sacred space with women from around the world and across the centuries. Jan believes it is essential for women to listen to one another and to bring the fullness of their lives, with all their wonders and messiness, into their prayer lives.
This book, Richardson writes, is an invitation to enter into a conversation. Here amongst these pages, in the presence of women past and present, is a place to enter into the mysteries that lie at the heart of who we are. Drawing from the often-hidden wellsprings of women's wisdom in Jewish and Christian traditions, In the Sanctuary of Women gathers together women from scripture and history whose lives invite us to move more deeply into our own: Eve, St. Brigid of Kildare, the Desert Mothers, Hildegard of Bingen, Harriet Powers, and the woman of the Song of Songs. Each chapter becomes its own sanctuary, gracing and engaging the reader with the reflections, stories, poetry, prayers, and blessings that Richardson offers. An invitation into reflection and prayer alone or in the company of others, In the Sanctuary of Women is a book to treasure and to share with the women and the men in your life.

PRAISE
"If a book can indeed shelter the soul awhile and hold it close in beauty and peace, nurture and devotion, then this book most certainly does. It is, just as its title says, a sanctuary, a wayside station of prayer, and a site of worship for those blessed enough to enter here."
— Phyllis Tickle, Compiler, The Words of Jesus A Gospel of the Sayings of Our Lord
"This refreshing resource widens the mind, deepens the heart, and strengthens the soul of spirituality. Richardson skillfully takes us to the edge and then brings us back to the core of spirituality. This book contains marvelous treasure."
— Joyce Rupp, Author of numerous best-selling books, including Open the Door: A Journey to the True Self
"To enter the Sanctuary of Women with Jan Richardson is to risk deep transformation, proof that this book is a God-gift. It journeys into the daunting spiritual landscapes traversed by those brave enough to wrestle with God's heart at close quarters. These womanly wisdoms are richly varied in their topography, but in each whether scripture's surprising Eve or Celtic Brigid or a Desert Mother or an emancipating Sojourner Truth or Jan herself is a wellspring of reflection and prayer dug very deep."
— Peter Storey, Former bishop, Methodist Church of Southern Africa

ABOUT THE AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS
Kaitlin Wernet is a storyteller surrendered to hope. Forever passionate about holding the tension of darkness and light, she is grateful for the Good News that acknowledges and redeems both. With a journalism degree from the University of South Carolina, she spends her days writing everything from marketing strategies and prizeworthy puns to nonfiction essays and She Reads Truth devotionals. Living in Nashville, Tennessee by way of Asheville, North Carolina, she’s always planning her next big travel adventure but vows to only plant roots in cities that rhyme.
Rebecca Faires loves the gospel story. And she needs it every morning when she wakes up to raise her five little people. Rebecca holds a bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College in German, and most recently worked as the managing editor and writer at She Reads Truth. She now works from home to live her dream of writing and illustrating books with her favorite mountain man. Cymone Wilder is a Nashville based designer, lettering artist, and sometimes photographer. She holds a degree in Art from Olivet Nazarene University, and has a professional, marketing-focused design background. She is fiercely passionate about producing meaningful and long-lasting work, drawing inspiration from the very real and analog world around her. Since 2013 she has collaborated with amazing clients–creating custom lettering artwork for established brands, bibles, books, apparel, and much more.
Caleb Faires was trained in drawing since childhood and he just can’t shake those early lessons. He has spent his life drawing and studied illustration, painting, and sculpture at Hillsdale College in Michigan. He has been fortunate to illustrate and design for private collectors, ad campaigns, and publishers. He also serves as a professor at New College Franklin, teaching drawing and sculpture. PRAISE
"The Book of Comforts gives us a safe place to bring our raw heartbreak so we can align it with the refuge found in God's Word. Every page wipes a tear, holds a hand, and gives a real embrace to anyone searching for relief in the midst of their deep sorrow, suffering, or grief.'
— Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times bestselling author and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries
"This book is full of beauty and truth from God's Word that are sure to be a balm for any hurting heart. So grateful for the authentic voices and stories here that give space for both grief and hope. A wonderful gift to anyone you know who is walking through a season of suffering."
— Ellie Holcomb, Dove Award–winning singer/songwriter
"The very existence of this book bears witness that the Gospel is true. With the turn of each page you will find evidence of God's comfort in the stories and in His Scripture. What a kind and generous gift The Book of Comforts is to an aching world."
— Raechel Myers, CEO of She Reads Truth
"When I'm sitting deep in my sorrow, human words seem to bounce right off my heart. Tucked inside this beautiful book are words of a different sort—truths from the God who knows grief because He experienced it too. Where our words fall flat, God's Word gives hope."
— Amanda Bible Williams, co-founder and chief content officer of She Reads Truth and He Reads Truth
"As a pastor, I often search for just the right book to help point the hurting or grieving toward the beauty, goodness, and truth of Gospel comfort. During the past year, a time of deep loss for my own family, I've needed such a book for myself. I am so grateful that I've found it. You're holding it in your hands. I urge you to buy it, to read it, and to pass it on (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). This is indeed a delightful book of comforts."
— George Grant, author and pastor of Parish Presbyterian Church
"I've walked through seasons of loss and longed for a book like this--one that's full of comfort and compassion, hope and encouragement, beauty and gentle strength. This is more than just a collection of pages; it's a place any hurting heart can go to as a refuge in life's hardest moments. I plan to return to it again and again."
— Holley Gerth, bestselling author of What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days
'In our damaged and disconnected world where things like loneliness, confusion, anxiety, and hopelessness seem on the rise even (and especially) in the most 'comfortable' surroundings, The Book of Comforts is a gift for all who are weary. It is filled with comforting images, Scripture, and thoughtful reflection, and the authors have done a masterful job not only telling us about the One Scripture calls 'the God of all comfort,' but also by showing us what His comforts look like, and where we can find them. I pray this book will help you find your rest in Jesus. It has certainly done this for me.'
— Scott Sauls, author of Befriend and Irresistible Faith
"No one has a simple story, and everyone does something with their pain. This book is a beautiful, helpful guide for walking through our pain with hope anchored in God's Word. Spend time with these words and images, and I believe you will find comfort."
— Russ Ramsey, author of Struck: One Christian’s Reflections on Encountering Death
"The place of grief can be one of the loneliest and most isolating places of all, yet none of us is exempt from it. This beautiful book invites us in to real stories of hardship and pain, yet also shows us that the comfort of God is more than an idea; it can be tangible in each of our lives. I feel as though this book is a perfect picture of 2 Corinthians 1:3-5, displaying 'the Father of compassion and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble.' And I believe that's exactly what this book will do—it will be a gift to many heavy hearts and weary minds."
— Natalie Grant, Singer/Songwriter

This Too Shall Last: Finding Grace When Suffering Lingers by K.J. Ramsey
This Too Shall Last, by therapist and writer K.J. Ramsey, combines personal stories and insightful research to reveal the surprising joy available in suffering.
This book is not a before-and-after story.
Our culture treats suffering like a problem to fix, a blight to hide, or the sad start of a transformation story. We silently, secretly wither under the pressure of living as though suffering is a predicament we can avoid or annihilate by working hard enough or having enough faith. When your prayers for healing haven't been answered, the fog of depression isn't lifting, your marriage is ending in divorce, or grief won't go away, it's easy to feel you've failed God and, worse, he's failed you. If God loves us, why does he allow us to hurt?
Over a decade ago chronic illness plunged therapist and writer K.J. Ramsey straight into this paradox. Before her illness, faith made sense. But when pain came and never left, K.J. had to find a way across the widening canyon that seemed to separate God's goodness from her excruciating circumstances.
She wanted to conquer suffering. Instead, she encountered the God who chose it. She wanted to make pain past-tense. Instead, God invited her into a bigger story.
This Too Shall Last offers an antidote to our cultural idolatry of effort and ease. Through personal story and insights from neuroscience and theology, Ramsey invites us to let our tears become lenses of the wonder that before God ever rescues us, he stands in solidarity with us. We are all mid-story in circumstances we did not choose, wondering when our hard things will end and where grace will come if they don’t. We don't need to make suffering a before-and-after story. Together we can encounter the grace that enters the middle of our stories, where living with suffering that lingers means receiving God's presence that lasts.

Handle with Care: How Jesus Redeems the Power of Touch in Life and Ministry by Lore Ferguson Wilbert
Handle with Care reclaims the God-given ministry of pure and healthy touch. Whether it’s fearful side hugs on one side or sexual abuse on the other, both the culture and the church aren’t doing very well with touch. Singles are staying single longer, dating is wrought with angst over purity, and marriages struggle to not interpret all forms of touch as sexual. Even the Bible seems to have endless rules about not touching things. There is simply no place where touch doesn’t seem threatened or threatening.
But a curious thing happens when Jesus comes into His ministry: He touches. Jesus touches the sick and the outcast, the bleeding and the unclean.
What could it mean for families, singles, marriages, churches, communities, and the world to have healthy, pure, faithful, ministering touch? Somewhere in the mess of our assumptions and fears about touch, there is something beautiful and good and God-given. As Jesus can show us, there is ministry in touching.

— Rebekah Lyons, bestselling author, Rhythms of Renewal and You Are Free

"Sobriety is complicated. No one has it all figured out, but no one writes toward it and speaks toward it and leads me toward it like Seth Haines. His writing is a map and a comfort. A lamp and a warm hearth. I trust his words in my joy and in my pain."
— Annie F. Downs, bestselling author, 100 Days to Brave and Remember God

— Scott Sauls, senior pastor, Christ Presbyterian Church; author, Jesus Outside the Lines and Irresistible Faith
"Years ago, Gerald May's theologically rich and psychologically trustworthy Addiction and Grace became my go-to resource. Today it's The Book of Waking Up. I'm so grateful to Seth for his wisdom and vulnerability in it."
— Chuck Degroat, professor of pastoral care and Christian spirituality, Western Theological Seminary
"Seth Haines does two things in this book: he awakens us to our addictions and reveals himself as a thoughtful, incisive, and skilled writer. This book invites us to dive deep into the condition of our hearts, and offers guidance, hope, and direction for a better way."
— Mike Cosper, author, Recapturing the Wonder and Rhythms of Grace; founder, Harbor Media
"This book encourages us not merely to wake up from addiction but also to wake up to adoration of the God who loves us and promises to be faithful to us forever. It is most effective when read slowly, reflecting on the challenges offered and allowing God to transform us."
— Glenn R. Kreider, professor of theological studies, Dallas Theological Seminary; editor-in-chief, Bibliotheca Sacra
"Poet Haines, who wrote about his alcoholism and recovery in Coming Clean, addresses the importance of waking up from a life of addiction to a life of delighting in God in this thoughtful memoir."

The Genesis Trilogy Series by Madeleine L'Engle
BOOK 1: And It Was Good beautifully approaches both the biblical text and creation itself with an intelligence and sensitivity that appeals to all seekers looking for a fresh communion with God in the natural world as the first book of The Genesis Trilogy. In the first book of her Genesis Trilogy, beloved author Madeleine L’Engle casts long, loving, and perceptive glances not only at the created universe but also at its Creator. L’Engle often crafted stories that dealt with the complexities of the universe, navigating time and space, religion and science, with uncanny ease and insight. This skill–most famously demonstrated in A Wrinkle in Time–is showcased in this nonfiction work, And It Was Good, through her ability to see the connection between Made and Maker at every level. She examines the vast beauty, order, and complexity of our world with enthusiasm and reverence, illuminating the characteristics of God, the first poet.
BOOK 2: A Stone for a Pillow is for the curious, spiritual seeker, where Madeleine L’Engle offers relevant lessons drawn from the life of Jacob from the Old Testament. Here, the son of Isaac becomes a spiritual companion to L’Engle, equipping her to deal with earthly and psychological struggles. Throughout her journey, L’Engle offers contemporary answers to questions that burden modern-day readers and believers. With her customary fearlessness and candor, she broaches such topics as the significance of angels, redemption, sexual identity, forgiveness, and the seemingly constant conflict between good and evil.
BOOK 3: Sold into Egypt - in L’Engle’s third book of her Genesis Trilogy, the author draws on the death of her husband to provide comfort and inspiration to those who suffer grief, loneliness, and doubt. Is Joseph–the deserted son of Jacob from the Old Testament–relevant in our modern age? For Madeleine L’Engle, the answer is a resounding yes; not solely because Joseph is an important historical character, but primarily because his experiences of disenfranchisement, tragedy, and profound betrayal resonate within our own society. These thoughtful meditations on obedience, prophecy, forgiveness, and compassion are masterfully woven to bridge gaps of belief, politics, education, and even faith.
--------------------------------------
Madeleine L’Engle possesses the same ambidextrous skill of storytelling as other literary giants, including C.S. Lewis and George MacDonald. Her fictional stories appeal to generations of readers and are equally embraced by both secular and religious readers. But it is her ability in her nonfiction to engage with the historical text of the Bible through a dynamic unpacking of protagonists, antagonists, and matters of faith that establishes The Genesis Trilogy as a highly treasured collection of spiritual writings.

You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit by James K. A. Smith
You are what you love. But you might not love what you think.
In You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit, award-winning author James K. A. Smith shows that who and what we worship fundamentally shapes our hearts. And while we desire to shape culture, we are not often aware of how culture shapes us. We might not realize the ways our hearts are being taught to love rival gods instead of the One for whom we were made. Smith helps readers recognize the formative power of culture and the transformative possibilities of Christian practices. He explains that worship is the "imagination station" that incubates our loves and longings so that our cultural endeavors are indexed toward God and his kingdom. This is why the church and worshiping in a local community of believers should be the hub and heart of Christian formation and discipleship.
Following the publication of his influential work Desiring the Kingdom, Smith received numerous requests from pastors and leaders for a more accessible version of that book's content. No mere abridgment, this new book draws on years of Smith's popular presentations on the ideas in Desiring the Kingdom to offer a fresh, bottom-up rearticulation. The author creatively uses film, literature, and music illustrations to engage readers and includes new material on marriage, family, youth ministry, and faith and work. He also suggests individual and communal practices for shaping the Christian life.

"Smith has an exceptional gift for disentangling things. Here again his efforts disentangle our minds and our hearts so our imaginations can be set free to be captured by and reflective of the kingdom of God. In these ways, Smith gives us a profound gift so we can seek and find what we need most."
— Mark Labberton, President, Fuller Theological Seminary
"Attention, all 'general readers'—not academics or specialists (though they're welcome too), but people who are tired of shoddy thinking and trendy slogans: this is the kind of book you've been hungering for. It's a bit like one of those 'Great Courses.' An inspired teacher, a compelling subject, and you. What are you waiting for?"
— John Wilson, editor, Books & Culture
"Informed by the insights of St. Augustine, You Are What You Love explores the substance of Christian discipleship as total life transformation through worship and liturgy. More than any other contemporary writer, Smith has helped me to understand how belief is embodied in us primarily through our habits of desire, and that God himself is the true satisfaction of our hungry hearts. This book should be read by every follower of Jesus."
— Sandra McCracken, singer and songwriter
"Jamie Smith writes with enormous understanding, authority, and warmth. Masterful!"
— Cornelius Plantinga Jr., president emeritus, Calvin Theological Seminary; author of Reading for Preaching: The Preacher in Conversation with Storytellers, Biographers, Poets, and Journalists
"A user-friendly introduction to the sweeping Augustinian insight that we are shaped most by what we love most, more so than by what we think or do. If sin and virtue are disordered and rightly ordered love, respectively, and if the only way to change is to change what we worship, then this will lead us to rethink how we conduct Christian work and ministry. Jamie gives some foundational ideas on how this affects our corporate worship, our Christian education and formation, and our vocations in the world. An important, provocative volume!"
— Tim Keller, Founding Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York City
"What do you love? is the most important question of our lives. With his characteristic ease, energy, and insightfulness, Smith explores in this compelling book not only what it is that we should love but also how we can learn to love what we should."
— Miroslav Volf, Yale Divinity School; author of A Public Faith and Flourishing: Why We Need Religion in a Globalized World
"In this wise and provocative book, Jamie Smith has the audacity to ask the question: Do we love what we think we love? It is not a comfortable question if we strive to answer it honestly. Smith presses us to do so and then shows us the renewed and abundant life that awaits Christians whose habits and practices--whose liturgies of living--work to open our hearts to our God and our neighbors."
— Alan Jacobs, Honors College, Baylor University
"Desiring the Kingdom influenced me more than any single book of the past decade. I--and the rest of the church--owe a great debt to Smith's scholarship, now made particularly accessible in You Are What You Love. As a means for reimagining the task of discipleship, this book should be required reading for every pastor, lay leader, and parent."
— Jen Pollock Michel, author of Christianity Today's 2015 Book of the Year, Teach Us to Want

Includes never-before-published material from L’Engle's workshops and speeches.
Paperback: 384 pages

ABOUT THE AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR
Madeleine L’Engle (1918–2007) was the author of more than 45 books for all ages, among them the beloved A Wrinkle in Time, awarded the Newbery Medal; A Ring of Endless Light, a Newbery Honor Book; and A Swiftly Tilting Planet, winner of the American Book Award. L’Engle was named the 1998 recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards Award, honoring her lifetime contribution to writing for teens.
PRAISE
"Madeleine L’Engle is one of the wise women not only of our time but of the ages. She would be comfortable in the company of Sappho and Sophocles, Dante and Chaucer, MacDonald and Dostoevsky, and they would rejoice in hers. She understands, as they did, that, confronted by the mysteries at the heart of the cosmos–the mysteries of union and separation, of progress and retreat, of good and evil–one must enlist in the struggle with all one’s might and at the same time bow in awe before the unspeakable beauty and pain and all that is inexplicable."
–Thomas Cahill, author of How the Irish Saved Civilization, The Gifts of the Jews, and Desire of the Everlasting Hills
"Although it would be impossible to distill into one volume all of Madeleine L’Engle’s wisdom about writing, this book comes close to doing just that. The selections address the whole writing life and capture those memorable expressions that are truly Madeleine. An inspiring and helpful resource–suitable for any writer at any stage of development."
–Vinita Hampton Wright, author of Grace at Bender Springs and Velma Still Cooks in Leeway
"This is a work that could only have come from Madeleine L’Engle. She is one of the few writers who has married the life of faith and the life of art together so beautifully. There are not many literary heroes among us, and if ever there was one, it is her. Within L’Engle’s reflections on the mystery and the craft of writing there is more than enough wisdom to help those of us who read it to become far better writers than we might have been otherwise. Sometimes when you read a great writer when they write about the art of craft itself, you want to retire immediately and become a plumber. This book made me want to pick up my pen and go back to work, and to work harder than I ever have before. That is no small gift."
–Robert Benson, author of Between the Dreaming and the Coming True and Living Prayer

Broken by Ryan Casey Waller
Before Jesus broke the bread, he blessed it. In the age of social media, where our lives are curated to show only our best and most beautiful selves, it is easy to believe we are the only ones who are broken. But we are not alone. We are all broken and in need of God's blessing. No one has it all together; no person is perfect.
In essays both humorous and achingly vulnerable, author Ryan Casey Waller urges us to join him in pouring out our brokenness, not just to God but to each other. Waller takes us through the trials of following Jesus during seasons of doubt and disbelief, anger, shame, and even hate, but always brings us back to the amazing news that Jesus blessed the bread before he broke it. Through Jesus, our brokenness is blessed, our wounds healed, and our hearts made whole.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ryan Casey Waller is a preacher and teacher, a father, and a (recovering) lawyer. Waller is passionate about expressing the Christian faith in accessible ways, both recalling the richness of tradition and history and celebrating authenticity and connection in a post-modern age. He lives in Dallas with his wife and their two children.
PRAISE
"Father Ryan Waller’s writing touched my heart from the beginning. I cocked my head to listen as I read this astonishingly honest book about being broken. At no time did I feel preached to; rather I felt I was getting an intimate look into the life of a man relating honestly to the rest of us. I laughed out loud at his self-deprecating revelations that were embarrassing and relatable. I wept at the stories told with his achingly heartfelt tenderness. All through the book I thought of all the ways Broken spoke to me - from the body broken, to the Bread - broken for me. It especially touched a very deep place within me where lie the broken relationships in my own life. This book will speak to the seekers and those hurt or alienated by the church. Fr. Ryan is a gentle man whose faith is real and his words are full of healing. This book is a gift of grace and mercy."
— MZC, Amazon Reviewer
"In his book, Broken, Waller has engaged me like no other Christian book ever has. His work reads like a conversation with a trusted mentor: there is vulnerability, questions asked, hard truth, and sage advice. We all go through seasons of darkness and Waller, with great empathy, reminds us that to be Christian is to admit and even embrace our brokenness and turn to a Lord that loves us anyways. I read this slowly and I suggest you do too. Each chapter is a different message and though it’s easy to read, it is far from easy to process… this is the type of book that affirms and challenges your faith in the best way possible. It is the type of book that you read through, highlight, dog ear, re-read, lend to friends (….or maybe just buy them a copy because you’re going to want this on your bookshelf always). But seriously, this book probably has what you need to hear right now, I know it was what I needed to hear... I am broken and I’m willing to bet that you are too. Waller – I hope you never stop teaching, preaching, and writing."
— Shannon Tabor, Amazon Reviewer
"The author has woven a colorful tapestry of Scripture, reflection, perspective, personal experience, humor, encouragement and comfort in facing life's challenges and the human condition. Bible stories and parables I've heard my entire life took on new meaning and relevance. Reading this book felt like snuggling under a warm comforter of love. Ryan Casey Waller is a gifted writer and his enthusiasm for the Bible is palpable."
— Janice L. Vickers, Amazon Reviewer
"Thoughtful, brave, funny, and genuine. I laughed loudly. I ached quietly. I mulled. As I read this book, I couldn't stop wishing this book was around when I was a teenager. Knee-deep in discovering independent thought, I was deeply suspicious of anything that sounded trite--and so much of what I heard about faith sounded trite and too perfect. The honesty in Broken would have rung so true and made me feel understood."
— Stacey, Amazon Reviewer
"Broken has been such a refreshing read for me. For one, it is honest, which is always good coming from a priest. He's honest about our personal brokenness, and our collective brokenness. As a parishioner, you want to feel that your priest understands and gets it that life is just sometimes hard. Father Ryan gets it. He also offers so much hope. Real hope to real problems. He doesn't shy away from the hard topics: homelessness, poverty, racism, family strife, mass shootings (at the time it was the Orlando nightclub). He goes to all the hard, dark places and shines light. Despite the topic, I found myself laughing out loud many times. Father Ryan is a really entertaining writer and story teller. I even caught my sixth grade son reading it (who gave it a thumb's up as well). I highly recommend this book!"

Be Kind to Yourself: Releasing Frustrations and Embracing Joy by Cindy Bunch
When we experience frustrations in daily life, many of us hold ourselves to blame. Self-criticism is often our default setting. But we can have a more gracious posture toward ourselves. We can practice disciplines of self-kindness.
Editor and spiritual director Cindy Bunch calls us to self-care through greater compassion for ourselves in her book Be Kind to Yourself: Releasing Frustrations and Embracing Joy. She helps us pay attention to the frustrations that bug us in order to identify negative thinking about ourselves or others. As we do so, we can discern what we need to let go. This allows us to lean into the things that bring us joy. Each chapter is filled with spiritual practices and creative exercises for reflection and celebration. The pages of the appealing smaller book format are illustrated with photographs and art from the author.
Be kind to yourself. And discover new opportunities to embrace joy.

PRAISE
"'The only true gift is a portion of oneself,' writes Ralph Waldo Emerson, and this, to me, is an apt description of what Cindy has done in the book you hold in your hand. She has shared with us generous portions of herself—her own story, her honest struggles, and the practices that have helped her endure and find joy in the midst of it all. Since all of us have our own stories that include joy and pain, gladness and sadness, this is something we all need."
— From the foreword by Ruth Haley Barton, founding president of the Transforming Center
"There is a sweet space where wisdom and innocence meet in the relationship between those who have given themselves to the rhythm of spiritual formation for a long time and those whose commitment is new. Cindy Bunch found it and then set the table for all of us to come together, using the same practices, to explore who we are in God and who we can become."
— Suzanne Stabile, author of The Path Between Us and host of The Enneagram Journey podcast

Culture Care: Reconnecting with Beauty for Our Common Life by Makoto Fujimura
"Culture is not a territory to be won or lost but a resource we are called to steward with care. Culture is a garden to be cultivated."
Many bemoan the decay of culture. But we all have a responsibility to care for culture, to nurture it in ways that help people thrive. In Culture Care artist Makoto Fujimura issues a call to cultural stewardship, in which we become generative and feed our culture's soul with beauty, creativity, and generosity. We serve others as cultural custodians of the future.
This is a book for artists, but artists come in many forms. Anyone with a calling to create—from visual artists, musicians, writers, and actors to entrepreneurs, pastors, and business professionals—will resonate with its message. This book is for anyone with a desire or an artistic gift to reach across boundaries with understanding, reconciliation, and healing. It is a book for anyone with a passion for the arts, for supporters of the arts, and for "creative catalysts" who understand how much the culture we all share affects human thriving today and shapes the generations to come.
Culture Care includes a study guide for individual reflection or group discussion.

PRAISE
"For Makoto Fujimura, caring deeply for souls is a way of life. Through his magnificent paintings, profound essays, and wider leadership with organizations like the National Council on the Arts and the Brehm Center at Fuller Seminary, Fujimura quietly and consistently nurtures artists and the people who love them, both inside and outside the church. In this life-giving book, he cultivates practices that help us honor God by caring for the soul of our culture."
"Culture Care is a beautiful and powerful work of art, and it is about much more than culture, art, beauty, and aesthetics; it is about nothing less than what it means to be human. We all have a spirit that is thirsty for culture, as do societies at large. This book serves up a powerful warning about what happens when that thirst is not quenched; given the state of the world today, I can only hope that everyone in a leadership position reads, rereads, and ponders what he or she can do to care about culture, and actively so."
"Mako offers helpful insights not only for artists, but for all partners in culture care. His acknowledgment of the importance of addressing brokenness, creating safe spaces for sharing journeys, and truth telling reflects an appreciation of the relational and transformational power of engaging in culture care. While the reader could be overwhelmed by the pervasiveness of the challenges, Mako inspires us toward meaningful action. A wonderful contribution!"

Glimpses of the New Creation: Worship and the Formative Power of the Arts by W. David O. Taylor
How do the arts in worship form individuals and communities?
Every choice of art in worship opens up and closes down possibilities for the formation of our humanity. Every practice of music, every decision about language, every use of our bodies, every approach to visual media or church buildings forms our desires, shapes our imaginations, habituates our emotional instincts, and reconfigures our identity as Christians in contextually meaningful ways, generating thereby a sense of the triune God and of our place in the world.
Glimpses of the New Creation argues that the arts form us in worship by bringing us into intentional and intensive participation in the aesthetic aspect of our humanity—that is, our physical, emotional, imaginative, and metaphorical capacities. In so doing they invite the people of God to be conformed to Christ and to participate in the praise of Christ and in the praise of creation, which by the Spirit’s power raises its peculiar voice to the Father in heaven, for the sake of the world that God so loves.

Sold into Egypt by Madeleine L'Engle
In Sold into Egypt, L’Engle’s third book of her Genesis Trilogy, the author draws on the death of her husband to provide comfort and inspiration to those who suffer grief, loneliness, and doubt.
